Sterling never bothered me and I became a fan in spite of the Sterling family. As the slum lord owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, I have followed their awful teams and enjoyed every minute. I loved the moral victories as a family of outcast players and fans, flourishing like a flower that was growing in a dump. The strange but beautiful dance of rising up and conquering adversity kept me a Clippers fan. But, today I start my road to recovery.
I’m a father now, and my perspectives have changed. Most my children take after their mother, blond hair, light eyes and a fair complexion. One of my children take after my father, dark hair, dark eyes and exposure to the sun will expose her dark skin. She is far from being a dainty flower, but she will be classified as a Latina because of her appearance and last name. The audio excerpt from deadspin.com made my stomach turn, and learning from Harvey Levin yesterday on Max and Marcellus, that hundreds of hours of audio exist with Donald Sterling’s trademark idiotic, bigoted and misogynistic ramblings, made me angry. So, I have to punish those that have enabled Donald all these years.
If Adam Silver and by extension the NBA owners, fail to launch the nuclear option to remove the team from the Sterling family, then it’s must be the players who must force Sterling’s removal. If the Players accept a suspension and fine, they are no different than Shelly Sterling, sitting court-side with Donald, enabling this awful human in all this pomp and circumstance, a delusional tyrannical king unaware of his eroding kingdom. If neither the Owners nor the Players remove Sterling, then I must remove myself from the NBA that I have loved.
My happiest day as a Clippers fan was brought by the simple phrase "basketball reasons." I am fearful that today, Donald Sterling and his family will retain the team because of "basketball reasons."
