The Clippers' Problem With Tanking
Last year and the year before, I was actively thinking about ping pong balls by March, and coveting as many as possible. (Long before March, really.) You may have noticed that I'm not really doing that this season. There are a few primary reasons.
First, I just don't see a lot of payoff in it. Citizen SilverClip posted some information in a recent comment that seems to indicate a world of potential for improved lottery odds:
10. Clippers 25-40
9. 76ers 23-41
8. NY 22-42
7. Detroit 22-42
6. Wash 21-40
5. Kings 22-43
4. Indiana 21-43

Clips Nation Night at Staples Center! Saturday, April 10th
If you haven't bought your tickets for the Clippers vs. the Warriors on April 10th yet, what are you waiting for? In case you missed the announcement before, we're having Clips Nation Night at Staples Center that night, with a reception for all the Citizens of Clips Nation before the game. The details are below, but there are a few updates that I wanted to tell everyone.
First of all, as of a few minutes ago, there were still four spots left in the 'High Five Tunnel' (for the first 50 ticket purchasers). So if you want your chance to high five Mardy Collins and Bobby Brown, you need to buy your tickets now.
Even if you don't make it in the first 50, there's still going to be great stuff. The Clippers just informed me of the items they are going to make available for the raffle:
- Replica Blake Griffin jersey
- 2 sets of Courtside upgrades to the 4/10 game vs. Golden State
- Clippers t-shirt
- Clippers Jersey Bag
- Blake Griffin figurine
Courtside seats would be COOL!
So be sure to buy your tickets, and let's get as many people there as possible. Keep reading after the jump for all of the details.

Miami 108 - Clippers 97 - So Forgettable, I've Forgotten it Already
You know, I watched this game, I'm sitting here looking at the box score, and I barely know what happened. What did the Heat do to win the game? Well, 35 free throws to the Clippers 13 accounts for most of the difference. And that might account for how disinterested I feel about the game - not a lot of fun watching guys parade to the free throw line, particularly guys on the other team. We didn't even really get the pleasure of seeing a great player play a great game. Sure Dwyane Wade finished with a game high 27 - but 15 of those came at the line. So if you ignore those (and let's face it, free throws don't often make highlight reels), Wade made six buckets, and didn't even play in the fourth quarter.
For the Clippers, Rasual Butler was great (31 points on 12 for 19 shooting, 6 for 11 on his threes) but no one really helped him. Chris Kaman was scoreless in the first half, and then missed his first three shots of the second half. He had a nice bounce back to finish 8 for 17, but it was too little too late. Drew Gooden was 1 for 9 - and most of those were point blank. We should have known we were in for a long night when, on the Clippers very first offensive possession of the game, Gooden missed an easy layup, then after the Clippers got the offensive rebound, Chris Kaman missed a wide open 10 footer, and then Gooden missed an easy tip as well. Three simple shots, three misses.

More Dunleavy Reactions Around the Web
There's not really any new information in any of this, but here are a few more links for you.
Bill Plaschke writes in his column about the endless possibilities that this move presents to the Clippers. I must say, it seems far too optimistic to assume that 26 years of futility are now behind them because a guy who's been around for seven of those years, who happened to lead them to their best record in those 26 years, has been fired. "If Clippers fans look up today, they can see the limit to this team's possibilities. It's called, rather improbably, the sky."
Tom Ziller of FanHouse offers the counterpoint - Donald Sterling is still the owner, as well as the common thread in the 26 years of being a laughingstock. It's one thing to make a serious offer to a big time coach or GM (though of course it remains to be seen if that even happens) - but if the guy has option, would he actually choose to work for Donald Sterling? This argument of course applies to LeBron James as well, but I think it has much more bearing on the discussion of coach and general manager. LeBron generates his own atmosphere - but the coach and GM are much more vulnerable to the whims of the owner.
Lisa Dillman fleshed out the story that she posted on the blog last night with a few more details, though nothing we hadn't heard before. She does give us this quote from an Andy Roeser eMail to the Times: "With all due respect to Mike, we arrived at the realization that we weren't going to be able to move forward together in the long term, and we felt that, in order to give us the most flexibility as we approach this opportunity-filled off-season, making a clean break was our best option at this time." That's actually a pet peeve of mine - when someone starts a sentence "With a due respect..." and then proceeds to say something entirely disrespectful. People do it with "No offense..." also. "No offense, but you're the most vile human I've ever met." "None taken."
Ramona Shelburne also added some Dunleavy information to her latest post at ESPNLA.

January 10th in LA - Clippers 94 - Miami 84 Recap Box Score
The Big Picture:
It's painful to think about the last time these two teams met. The Clippers won that game 94-84, moving their record on the season to 17-18. They're 8-21 since. Ouch. Of course, the very next game was that bizarre night in Memphis, when Chris Kaman was scratched because of an injury suffered in warm ups, then the Clippers lost a big lead after the arena was evacuated, and it all happened the same day we found out that Blake Griffin was lost for the season. Usually a season is lost little by little, and you couldn't possibly pinpoint when it happened. Not so this year. We know the exact date (though the moment - whether it was when Blake was shut down or when the pipe at the FedEx Forum broke - is debatable). But before that, there was the win against the Heat. Coming as it did on the heels of a victory of the Lakers, the team seemed poised to make a real run. Can it really be only two months ago? Seems like two years. So, this Clippers team kind of sucks, as compared to that team back in January. They appears to have gone to P.O.T.S. - "playing out the string". It is however possible that they are looking at this road trip, and saying to themselves that if they want to avoid the embarrassment of an 0-5 trip and seven game losing streak, they're not getting a better chance. The Heat are a .500 team in the Eastern Conference and only 17-14 at home. This is the game, fellas. I'm assuming that Eric Gordon won't play based simply on the fact that he didn't play last night. It remains to be seen if the rest of the Clippers will play - I mean, really and truly play.
