The Clippers in the Zone
At the start of the fourth quarter of Wednesday's game between the Clippers and Milwaukee, these were the lineups on the floor: for the Clippers, it was DeAndre Jordan, Craig Smith, Travis Outlaw, Rasual Butler and Steve Blake; for the Bucks, it was Andrew Bogut, Jerry Stackhouse, John Salmons, Royal Ivey and Brandon Jennings. Notice anything strange about that? Jerry Stackhouse was playing power forward for the Bucks.
Milwaukee had finished the third quarter on an 18-2 run, with Jennings torching the Clippers man-to-man defense for 16 points in the quarter. Kim Hughes opened the fourth in a zone defense, the Clippers neutralized Jennings, and pulled away for the win.
I spoke with the coach about the use of the zone after practice on Friday. He didn't want to give too much away, but I think we can safely say that we'll see more of it against Sacramento Sunday afternoon, especially from that second unit.

The Big East's Very Bad Day
The glory and the curse of the NCAA tournament, particularly the first weekend, is that it all happens so quickly. So by the time I get a chance to post my thoughts on the first day of the tournament, the second day is already done. But I can't resist a dig at the Big East, even if they get a little redemption on Friday.
The Big East conference may have had the worst single day for any conference in the history of the NCAA tournament on Thursday. Had Villanova not been able to rally to beat Robert Morris in overtime, it would most certainly have been the worst.
Considering that only four times in the history of the NCAA tournament has a 15 seed beaten a 2 seed, the very fact that Nova was forced to go to overtime is bad enough. Then add in the fact that Georgetown (a 3 seed), Notre Dame and Marquette (both 6 seeds) all lost to double digit seeds and you see a pattern emerging of a conference that was wildly overrated, at least by the tournament committee.

Clipper Awards 2009-2010
With all the chatter about League MVPs, DPOY, All NBA, most improved etc I decided to write up a Awards night for the Clippers this year. I realize the season isn't "over" over but who are we kidding, the season has been over for a month now. In the spirit of our childhood sports league we're all about giving out team awards even after a crappy season because its not about wins or losses... right???

Clippers 101 - Milwaukee 93 - Victory Courtesy of ESPN
You can thank ESPN and Kevin Arnovitz for the win tonight. As we mentioned in the comments of the preview, this game was on the worldwide leader tonight because the Bucks are the hottest team in basketball. And for that same reason, ESPN.com sent their crack NBA editor Arnovitz to cover the game - from the Bucks' perspective. The lede of the story was of course going to be "Bucks Use Stingy D to Win 13th Game in Last 14." Unfortunately, the Clippers shot 53% against the hottest team in basketball and stomped all over the story. So thank you Daily Dime.
It was an entertaining game to be sure. I have to give the Clippers and Kim Hughes credit - although they looked completely cooked during the road trip, they have given excellent effort in two straight games, which is not what we were expecting moving into the final four weeks of the season.
After a deadlocked first quarter, the game went in surges. The Clippers were +9 in the second, the Bucks +11 in the third, the Clippers +10 in the fourth. In both the second and fourth, the Clipper advantage was keyed by the second unit. Interestingly, none of them finished with spectacular numbers - 26 bench points, 8 for 17 shooting. But make no mistake, those guys keyed the win.

Last Fan Standing
OK, this is a weird semi-plug. A week or so ago, I got an email inviting me to compete in a thing called Last Fan Standing. It's a quasi-competition involving blogging and the NCAA tournament. I'm not sure I completely understand how it works, but I've been assigned a team (Maryland, so maybe I can talk to Steve Blake and John Lucas about them) and if they advance in the tournament, then I advance also. And it appears there is also some mechanism for you to vote for your favorite bloggers here. But I honestly don't know what that vote thing is all about - if someone has explained that to me, I missed it. Looks like the voters can win prizes - not sure what the best blogger wins.
Anyway, in exchange, all I have to do is create free content for them related to the tournament. So I figured, what the heck? The first post was due before I was assigned Maryland, and I wrote it on Sunday... then as far as I know it didn't get posted until today.... and I'm at a complete loss as to how anyone would find it on their own to read it. I only found it because I wrote it. Suffice it to say, the Last Fan Standing has a few interface issues as far as I can tell. If you want to read it, go here and then scroll down to the third post. Seriously. No permalink. My favorite part is that it doesn't even have my name. Let's say you read that, thought it was great, decided I was your favorite blogger and wanted to vote for me.... how exactly would you do that? What am I missing here?
But since I've done the leg work for you, you should just go ahead and vote for me - for whatever it's worth. If nothing else, it will move me up the 64 name list a little. I'm number 63 right now, since it's sorted by number of votes (that would be zero so far) and first name (should have gone with ClipperSteve).

The Back Story:
First meeting of the season (really?) The teams split their two meetings last season.
The Big Picture:
The trends are not good. The Clippers have lost a season high eight straight games. They are 4-15 in 19 games under Kim Hughes. They have been, in a word, terrible. Although it's never likely to change, there are many (myself included) who believe that the NBA regular season is too long, and really this is exhibit A. There is a point at which teams face the fact that they have no chance to make the playoffs - and if there are still 30 or 40 games left in the season, those games can become tedious. Sure, they're pros and they're getting paid to play a great game. But the difference between going out there and playing to earn your salary, because you owe it to the fans (i.e. playing because it's your job) and playing to make the playoffs and/or to improve your chances in the playoffs is night and day. You can call the team names and say that they're tanking, but the simple fact is that they're motivation level is going to be different than if they were still in the race. It doesn't mean they'll never win again - it does mean that the overall winning percentage will plummet, as it has for the Clippers. Just look at the month-by-month won-loss record for the Clippers: November 8-6, December 6-8, January 6-9, February 4-8, March 1-8 (so far). They showed some life against New Orleans Monday night, but unfortunately ran into a team that couldn't miss. Can they come out with energy at home again tonight, or was Monday's loss the final nail in the 'mail it in' coffin?
