The Back Story:
The Big Picture:
The Clippers played the Wizards 11 days ago at the outset of their Grammy trip and got exactly the start they were looking for -- a blowout win against an overmatched opponent. And that was in Washington. With that exceedingly easy victory still fresh in mind, it's hard to imagine a rematch in LA being the least bit competitive. But the Clippers would be wise to remember two things: (1) Cleveland February 8 and (2) Portland February 14. The Clippers got complacent against the Cavs last week, especially upon learning at the last moment that Kyrie Irving would not play, and ended up losing a game they should have won. And last night in Portland, Washington put up 124 points in beating the Trail Blazers. So take the game seriously. The Clippers haven't lost consecutive games since 2011, and a loss in Dallas in game they could have won will probably help focus the team as well. Blake Griffin has owned the Wizards in his young NBA career -- he posted his first career triple double against them late last season, and likely would have posted his third had his presence been required for more than 32 minutes in the first meeting this season. He finished with 21 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists. The Wizards haven't found anyone who can come close to defending Blake in two seasons, so I would expect more of the same tonight.

The Back Story:
The Big Picture:
The Clippers are 4-1 on their season-long road trip as they arrive in Dallas to face the Mavericks on their final stop. The trip includes two close wins over good teams (Orlando and Philadelphia) and two blowout wins over terrible teams (Washington and Charlotte) and only one blemish (a bad loss in Cleveland). Getting focused for the defending champs should be easy -- the Mavs have won nine straight over the Clippers in Dallas going back to 2006. When the Clippers went to Utah a couple weeks ago, Chris Paul asked Ralph Lawler to let him know whenever the Clippers have a record of futility against an opponent -- I think this one qualifies, so hopefully Ralph did his job. A motivated Paul will always go a long way towards a victory. The Clippers beat the Mavs in LA last month, without Paul; but they did have Chauncey Billups for that one, and he ended up making the game winning three at the buzzer. Still, no offense to Chauncey, but given a choice of having Paul or Chauncey against the Mavs, I'll take Paul every time. In the first meeting, Dallas bottled up Blake Griffin pretty well, holding him to 6 for 15 shooting, but he did have 17 rebounds and 7 assists. They'll likely need his scoring tonight, playing on the road.

The Big Picture:
The Clippers got a very ugly win in Philadelphia last night, but it looks just fine in the W column. The team could not make a jump shot and they were 2 for 19 on three pointers, but they took care of the ball, they rebounded, they played defense, and they got the win. Hopefully it won't be quite as big a struggle tonight, against the worst team in the league. The Clippers of the past were certainly well known to lose these types of games -- they lost to a Cleveland team on a record breaking losing streak last season after all. Hopefully, the lapse the team experienced on Wednesday against an undermanned Cleveland team was their one mishap this trip, and it will serve to focus them for the Bobcats. It would be nice to get some players dialed back in after tough nights, like Caron Butler and Randy Foye and even Blake Griffin. But first things first -- win the game. Hopefully they won't have to rely on a Chris Paul last second shot tonight. The starters could use a little rest heading into the final stop of the road trip in Dallas, so a blow out would be especially nice.

First meeting of the season. The Sixers dominated the Clippers twice last season.
- December 15th, 2010 in Philadelphia - Philadelphia 105, Clippers 91 - Recap Box Score
- March 16th, 2011 in Philadelphia - Philadelphia 104, Clippers 94 - Recap Box Score
The Big Picture:
The Clippers suffered their worst defeat of the season on Wednesday night in Cleveland. Sure, losses at San Antonio and Utah and at home against the Nuggets were by a wider margin, but they were also to good teams. Cleveland is a non-playoff team in the East, and were playing without their leading scorer not to mention two other key members of their team. It was the first game the Clippers played without Chauncey Billups after learning that he was lost for the season with a torn Achilles tendon, so that may have contributed to the poor performance -- but they need to get over that. If it was on their minds in Cleveland, so be it, but the season's too short to allow that injury to affect their performance for long. Philadelphia is a much tougher opponent than Cleveland, and a team that shut down Blake Griffin in two games last season. The Clippers haven't lost back to back games since games 2 and 3 of the season -- they've been coming back strong after losses for a while now. I expect them to be focused and sharp in this one. I don't think Chris Paul will allow them to be anything less. But will it be enough against a very deep Sixers team?

- March 19th, 2011 in Los Angeles - Clippers 100, Cleveland 92 - Recap Box Score
The Big Picture:
The Clippers played the first third of the 66 game regular season with Chauncey Billups. They will have to play the final two thirds without him. Billups went down to the floor late in Monday night's game in Orlando, clutching his lower left leg. An MRI on Tuesday confirmed what everyone already feared -- Billups had torn his Achilles tendon. He'll be out for the season, throwing his future with the team into uncertainty, though he says he plans to play again, and would like to play for the Clippers. On paper, the loss of Billups is not insurmountable. The backcourt happens to be the one position at which the Clippers are deep. Randy Foye will move into the starting lineup, where he has always done a respectable job. Caron Butler, Chris Paul and Mo Williams will probably all need to take a few more shots to make up for Billups' absence, but again that's all doable. It's the intangibles that will be harder to replace. But then again, it helps to have Paul in that regard. In this, the first game since the injury, the Clippers' emotions may be the biggest hurdle. Dealing with the weight of the loss may be harder than his actual absence from the basketball court. We'll see. The team could come out in a funk over the situation, or they could come out extra motivated to win in his absence.

- March 23, 2011 in Los Angeles - Clippers 127, Wizards 119 - Recap Box Score
The Big Picture:
The Clippers begin their longest road trip of the season the way you want to begin a road trip -- against one of the worst teams in the league. In their last game the team looked tired in losing by 20 to Denver. They had every right to be tired, playing the second game of back to backs and their fourth game in five nights. But then again, it's not like there's a lot of rest in the schedule the remainder of the season. If they were tired on their fourth game in five nights, what about their fifth game in seven nights, like tonight? The last time the Clippers got blown out, they turned around and beat the defending champion Dallas Mavericks the next night, while playing without Chris Paul, so the good news is that the team seems to be capable of quickly moving forward from a poor performance. With Andray Blatche injured, it's hard to figure who the Wizards can possibly use to defend Blake Griffin. The last time Griffin saw the Wizards, he went for his first career triple double with 33 points, 17 rebounds and 10 assists in a double overtime win. That may be a little too much to hope for tonight, but he could certainly have a big game.

The Back Story:
The Big Picture:
There is no hotter team in the NBA right now than the Los Angeles Clippers. Philadelphia shares their four game winning streak, but all of Philly's wins came at home, with two of them coming against the two worst teams in the league. The Clippers have beaten four teams with a combined winning percentage of .643, with two of those wins coming on the road. LA has yet another challenge tonight, facing a Denver team looking to avenge a loss from just four days ago. The Clippers have the advantage of playing at home, but are also playing the second game of a back to back. Still, as well as LA has played at home this season, I can't imagine that energy is going to be a big problem. Chris Paul has been playing like an MVP since fully recovering from his hamstring injury (still, no chants, per Another Son of Mike Smith). He's coming off of games of 26 points/14 assists and 34 points/11 assists. More importantly, he has the ability to get points in crunch time of close games. The team had also been filling it up from outside until last night in Utah. After a 5 for 22 night, hopefully their three point range will return tonight. Three pointers were a major factor in the first win over Denver, as the Clippers sank 14 of them.

The Back Story:
The Big Picture:
On back to back nights Sunday and Monday, the Clippers beat the team with the second best record in the West on the road, and then beat the team with the best record in the West in LA. So what's next? Only a trip to the city where they've suffered a decades long nightmare of futility. The Clippers have lost 42 games in their last 43 trips to Salt Lake City, including an embarrassing 108-79 drubbing just two weeks ago. But there's plenty of reason to think tonight could be different. For one thing, the Clippers played that first meeting without Chris Paul and Mo Williams. The Clippers have three players with a PER over 20 this season, and they're two of them, so they make a difference. For another thing, the Clippers are simply playing great basketball right now. They're shooting lights out, they're getting good spacing, they're getting great interior play from DeAndre Jordan and Blake Griffin, and Chris Paul is once again Chris Paul after missing five games. The Clippers were 11-4 in January, and three of the four losses occurred while Paul was out of the lineup, or still rusty from his layoff. They would certainly have been 13-2 had Paul not gotten hurt, if not better. The good news about heading to Utah is that there's little chance of the Clippers getting complacent and letting up against the Jazz -- not when they have such a history of losing in Utah. They'll want this one.
