Maggette Watch

In today's LA times, Jason Reid reports that Corey Maggette has given up on the 'brave face' approach and now everyone knows a trade is inevitable.

"Me and Coach [Mike] Dunleavy ? we don't see eye to eye," Maggette said Friday night before scoring 18 points in a 109-99 loss to Portland at the Rose Garden. "Coach doesn't respect what I do. If that's the case, it might be time for me to go, move on and have a new beginning. It's better for me to go."

A few weeks ago, after citizen ZhivClip pointed out that Corey wasn't really the Clippers sixth man, but more like the 7th or 8th man, I started tracking a few things about MDSr's use of the talented wing.

The table below tracks Corey's minutes, where those minutes rank him for that game, his first appearance in the game, the overall order for that appearance, and his total first half minutes, along with his points and rebounds.

A great sixth man, a real Sixth man of the year candidate, can be a terrific asset. He may not start, but he plays significant minutes. Mike Miller of the Grizzlies was 4th on the team in minutes per game when he won the award last year. Maggette is currently tied for 7th with Tim Thomas, and will undoubtedly be 8th very soon.

As you can see in the table below, in 8 games this season, Corey has not been among the top 6 Clippers in minutes played for that game. He has only been the first Clipper off the bench in 9 out of 19 games he did not start. Even his lone start was a backhanded compliment - MDSr wanted Ross on the bench to match up with Ginobili.

The minutes scenario is actually worse than it looks when you consider that Corey is getting a lot of garbage minutes. He's led the team in minutes played twice - in blowout losses to the Nuggets and Spurs.

This goes beyond a coach who wants an explosive scorer coming off the bench, which is certainly a reasonable and viable strategy. Corey leads the Clippers in points per minute and is also a terrific per minute rebounder (ahead of Aaron Williams and Tim Thomas, for instance). But where are the minutes?

At any rate, I figured I needed to post this data soon, or there would no longer be a reason to have it at ClipsNation.

Corey is misused
he is so efficient in many areas.

He should be the 2nd option in the offense.

He is a rugged scorer.  But he is a liability on D.

And he can be a TO machine, which undermines his otherwise efficient numbers.

The refs don't respect him much.  Gets called for a lot of charges.

Towards the end of 04-05, and the beginning of 05-06, he was playing lights out ball.

I remember the last game against the Lakers in 04-05 when he literally took over the game on both ends of the floor.

How about Game 6 vs. Phoenix.  25 pts. on 8 FGA.  Unheard of.

He will be missed, but hopefully he ends up somewhere where he is appreciated.  I don't think he'll be an all-star, but he'll be a 20+PPG scorer.

Funny thing about Corey's D...
Am I the only one who remembers it this way?  Wasn't Corey considered their best defensive wing when he first got here?  I mean, sure, QRichardson and DMiles weren't setting the bar real high, but still.

I guess it's a measure of how much better the Clippers defense is...

I just want it to be over
Call up your source.  Tell him to talk to EB the First and start here:

Maggette to Miami.  Clippers and Heat expiring contracts including James Posey to the Sixers.  All Clippers and Heat 2007 first round picks to the Sixers.  Iverson to the Clippers.  Find anyone who wants Cassell and move him out.  Take pennies on the dollar.  Fill in the details.

I can't watch another no-effort performance, and yet I still don't want Iverson either.  Somehow no matter what happens I feel like I've already lost.

Corey Chant
Hoping we can get some Corey chants started today. Sounds like he may only have a few(?) home games left. The guy has provided so much joy and left his heart (and limbs) on the floor for us all so many times.

We are all so good at bitching and moaning - Now it is our time to show some appreciation!!!

I'll Help Lead the Chants
Corey has been a favorite of mine since he arrived.  And he always plays hard.

Carmelo out = Nuggets desperate
Guessing the Nuggets will be desperate to trade for AI in a hurry now that Melo is out for 15 games. JR smith also out for ten games = they need a scorer...
