Around SBN: 2012 Budweiser Shootout Entry List Released

Convergence: Past coming to the future

I was looking over some old pieces on basketball from Dean Oliver as a refresher and I came across one that I found to be timely to the Clippers this year.  Its from 1996 and its just a quick flyover about "risky" strategies in basketball.

In short, the Clippers play what at the time would have been considered "not risky" basketball.  Not alot of 3's, mostly man defenses, no press defense, not alot of fronting, etc.  This is the type of play recommended when a team is considered a "favorite".  As you slip from favorite to underdog you want to introduce variance by jacking up triples, etc.

I don't know if the 3 ball situation is still considered as risky today, but it still remains true that "one is more likely to get 6 points or 50 points by shooting twenty three pointers than by shooting twenty two pointers."  A team like the Suns can bump that to a higher average by loading the court with shooters, but they are still going to have a night when nothing falls and it costs them against a bad team.

There are obviously lots of ways to go with this.  Should the Clippers adopt a more risky brand of ball?  Are they merely failing to know when to switch gears?  With many teams always playing this "risky" brand of ball, does it really matter what you do?

I mean if Portland is going to go risky and hit 9-15 from deep or Miami goes 3-25, does it really matter what the steady team does?  99 points lost to the Blazers and 101 beat the Heat.  Should the Clippers continue to try to put up 100 points and let the chips fall where they may?

Do they have a choice?
By design, the Clippers don't take a lot of threes.  But at this point it's also by necessity.  They can run more plays for Thomas or Mobley behind the arc, but no team in basketball has fewer legitimate threats from out there.  2 guys?  Amazingly, when the Clippers needed a three against the Magic the other day, Thomas actually got open.  If I were coach Hill, I'd be livid with my team for losing one of two guys you have to cover.

There is however an aspect of the Clippers game they could develop with their personnel.  They could run more.  I know that we like to get Brand and Kaman established, but they are also good athletes, and with Livingston pushing the ball up, I really think this team could be a pretty good running team.  If nothing else, it would get them into their sets more quickly.

Like you said, they could be calling plays for it and get those guys 15+ looks per game between them. I'm not advocating it necessarily, but in the grand scheme of things, its an option on the menu.

Then this cuts both ways.  On defense they seem to be more likely to be victimized by the 3 ball.  Thats giving the other team the high variance they need to stay in the game.  I think they should just man up always.  No help unless it becomes absolutely necessary.

Like the Heat game, Kapono was getting open because there was alot of help going on early.  That let the Heat stay in the game through the first.  The player willing to shoot was getting good looks.

Lets see what happens in the Wizards game.  If any Leastern team wants success through variance its Agent Zero's men.  They have had that success the recently (to the tune of player and coach recognition) because the dice rolls have been going their way.
