Suns 118 - Clippers 97 - Pre-season

In the Clippers first home game of the pre-season, they lost 118-97 to the Suns.  They allowed Phoenix to go on a 30 to 6 run at the end of the first half over the course of 7.5 minutes.  That's a lot of points in 450 seconds.  Remember 7 Seconds or Less?  Well 30 points in 450 seconds is a point every 15 seconds, and, you know, the other team gets the ball in there some too.  This is the seamy underbelly of an uptempo attack with downmarket talent - you give up 30 points in 450 seconds to the other team.  During the same stretch the Clippers made one basket.

Poor Chris Kaman can't catch a break.  His back kept him out of the first two pre-season games.  He got back on the floor in time to face Golden State and now consecutive games against the Suns.  Chris can score easily enough given the chance (especially against the likes of Sean Marks with Stoudamire rehabbing his scoped knee), but he just can't keep up with the pace.  He committed 3 turnovers and 6 fouls in fewer than 19 minutes of playing time.  He was 5 for 8 from the field (no dunks - blocked once by Brian Skinner).  I think he's going to be happy when the Clippers play the Lakers or the Bobcats on Sunday.

After the LA Times wondered Thursday morning how the Clippers could get Al Thornton and Corey Maggette on the floor at the same time, MDsr showed them by starting both.  With Cat Mobley hurt, Maggette started at the shooting guard and Thornton started at small forward, along with Tim Thomas, Kaman and Brevin Knight to guard Steve Nash.  The Clippers went through dozens of different starting lineups last season as MDsr looked for advantageous matchups and a combination that worked; that was WITH a healthy Elton Brand, the only constant.  I have a feeling last year was nothing compared to life without Elton, where coach is going to over-manage and tweak the matchups on a nightly basis.

The Maggette-Thornton experiment was relatively successful on offense as they led five Clippers in double-figures with 16 and 14 respectively.  But defense is going to be the challenge for those guys, as it was for the team in this game.

More of the same Saturday, when the Clippers play the Suns again, this time on the purple and gold floor as part of the Lakers Shootout - bringing a final four atmosphere to the NBA pre-season.  It's win or go home!play the other team that didn't win.

For anyone pulling for the Clippers to keep Yaroslav Korolev and waive veteran Aaron Williams (highly unlikely), there might have been a glimmer of hope in Korolev's 12 minute off the bench, while Williams got another DNP.  Of course, Williams is on the team because he is a known quantity, so it's not surprising that he's not playing a lot in pre-season.

Last thing:  what the hell is AM 1260 anyway?  I got that station NOT AT ALL in my car.

Oh well...
It's not like I need the radio that much.  But Kmozart?  really?  Oh well. The MLB playoffs will be over soon.

Pros and Cons
Kind of an encouraging outing for the Clips.  Kind of.  I listened to the first half (thinking why am I listening to this scratchy alarm clock radio for a preseason game--what's wrong with me?).  And the Clips played very well in the first quarter.

The big news is not that Thornton started, but that Knight did, and he did a good job in getting the ball to scorers Maggette, Thornton, and Thomas, and he kept Nash in check.  The Clips were doing everything right and had an 8 point lead at one point.  Kaman was even contributing in the first 5 minutes with a few rebounds.  I think that Dunleavy might have pulled Kaman a little too quickly in that first quarter, in order to put Patterson in.  But it was good that he started him.

Dunleavy also made a good effort to keep Maggette out on the floor.  He kept him in through the first wave, and then brought him back pretty quickly.  The problem, unfortunately, is that Maggs got off to a fast start and then missed a few shots as the roof caved in.  But I also think, though I'm not sure, that Maggs was taking his short break right in the middle of your 450 second meltdown.

And you know who was on the floor, with a horrendous +/=?  Who else but QRoss.  The killer on the Suns--or one of the scariest killers--is Barbosa.  For a big chunk of the 450 seconds Dunleavy brought in Cassell, along with Diaz and Ross.  Barbosa got things started and helped cut the lead from 8 to 3 or 4, and then Grant Hill started killing the Clippers, his point total steadily climbing, while Marion was rebounding and Nash cruised along quietly adding to an assist total that any mortal would be excited about.

So Diaz got a very early call, and it seems that he and Ross failed to distinguish themselves.  Please get healthy, Cuttino Mobley. My guess is that cutting Korolev is already a foregone conclusion, but Dunleavy would love to see Diaz hit 3s and keep up with Barbosa.  Only it didn't happen.  And a variety of suspects could have been trying to guard Grant Hill (including QRoss) and it probably doesn't matter that no one got to see what Korolev would have done against him on defense.  Was it not Ross but Patterson guarding him?  Thornton?  Maggette?  And by the way, Raja Bell didn't hit his shots or do anything when Maggette was at SG and presumably guarding him, fyi.  That changed too in the 2nd quarter.  My guess is that Korolev got to play against good ol Pike.

Not sure how Kaman picked up so many fouls so fast.  Like I said, he started okay, and his line is about what it should be on a weak night--what you would expect against the Suns.  On the other hand, Sean Marks was getting a lot of minutes, and Kaman should be able to do some damage against him, and he didn't.  But at least he's playing and not getting hurt, getting some preseason action, and let's hope that he gets better every game up to opening day.

And playing the Suns back to back should lead to some interesting adjustments.  We'll see if MD continues to start Knight.  Sam is old enough that he doesn't mind coming off the bench, I don't think.

The Clips did a good job of punching the Suns, taking their first punch, and then punching them back again.  The fact that the Suns were able to bring in Barbosa while the Clips didn't have Mobley anywhere in sight made a big difference, and the 2nd round knockout was swift and brutal.  But this is one of the best teams in the league.

Let me summarize, Zhiv
You listened to the game on the radio.  MDSr did a good job in keeping the Clips' best player in the game.  Ross was useless.  Mobley would have made a difference.  Kaman can't hang in up tempo. MDSr will use Diaz for three point shooting.

Good stuff.  Ross is indeed useless against an uptempo offense with multiple killer weapons.  MDSr will soon realize that with this team Ross' game is counterproductive.  Kaman is out of shape.  You can't force the Suns into a half court game.  Diaz will learn to shoot consistently if given the time. It shouldn't be a surprise if he makes the team.

aaron williams
will have to stick around if clips are serious about up-tempo. he can run at center while kaman sits on the bench and gets distracted by shiny objects in the crowd.

unclear
That was one thing I left out--you have to keep wondering what Aaron Williams role might be on this team.  It's really not clear.

You have Kaman and Davis.  Then you have Thomas and Powell.  And Brand is going to be back.

With the early look it seems like MD is giving Diaz some kind of chance of making the team.  But if he keeps Diaz (or Korolev) he has to get rid of Williams.

With two centers and new tweener big guys on the roster, other teams playing small, and most of the centers around being stiffs, and Brand coming back, you have to wonder what Williams could possibly do for you.

The Clips get bumped...
...off of 710 for Trojan football, basketball, basket weaving, women's field hockey, any reason whatsoever. If they were on 710 for 50% of their games last year, I'd be shocked.
