Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Livingston's MRI

From the Clippers' press release:

The MRI revealed that Livingston suffered tears to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), medial collateral ligament (MCL) and lateral meniscus. Livingston also suffered a patella dislocation, in addition to the previously diagnosed tibia/femoral dislocation.

I'm not a doctor, but I'm pretty sure that's not good.

In laymen's terms, his knee exploded.  The three main structures holding the knee together are torn.   Of the four main ligaments in the knee, only the lateral collateral ligament (LCL) was spared.  ACL, PCL and MCL - that's the trifecta my friends.  To put it into perspective, a tear to any one of those ligaments is career-threatening.  He tore all three.  I've literally never heard of such a thing.

I think its safe to say that we can
now downgrade from "Get well soon" to "Get well at some point in your lifetime".

God damnit...

Not so fast...
Let's not cash it in for Shaun just yet, folks.  I don't know if anyone at clipsnation follows pro football, but if you remember the playoffs of 2006, Carson Palmer tore his knee up in a similar way as Shaun.  Torn MCL and ACL, cartilage damage, and dislocated kneecap.  Ouch.  I'm no doctor, but I do have a bit of expertise in these matters and the true determination of how well Shaun can be expected to recover can only be made after surgery.  The ligaments can be replaced or repaired and can eventually return to full strength, but of necessity is keeping the amount of soft tissue and cartilage removed to a minimum.  Arthroscopic and orthopaedic medicine has improved drastically in the last 10 years as it relates to sports medicine.  It's not an impossibility that Shaun can make a return to playing health.  It sure as heck won't be easy, but don't count the kid out just yet.

I agree...
I'm a basketball guy... and this sounds like a football injury.  But to some extent, whether it's one ligament or three, the surgery is somewhat similar and the rehab will be similar.
