Rockets 109 - Clippers 105

For a while there, this game reminded me of what this team was like last season.  As if awaking from a dream, I watched the Clippers play good basketball against a quality opponent (on the road, no less) for the first time this season (or at least since the game against Dallas in November).

Despite an absolutely horrendous start to the game and to the second half, the Clippers overcame a Houston lead that was 17 at one point.  They did it with defense in the fourth quarter - after having given up 87 points through three.  The Rockets missed 10 of their first 12 shots in the quarter, and the two makes both came after offensive rebounds.  In the first 8:25 of the fourth, the Clippers outscored them 23-9 to take a three point lead at 99-96, their first lead of the game.  But as is often the case, it seemed that they had expended so much energy during the comeback, they simply didn't have enough left for the closeout.

The Clippers still led the game by one, with the ball, with 37 seconds left.  Alas, it was not to be.  In the final minute of a game, it's simply better to have a Tracy McGrady than an Elton Brand.  After Elton missed a jump shot, McGrady penetrated and passed off to Luther Head for the go-ahead three.  Down two with plenty of time, Elton's pass for Corey Maggette was deflected by Yao (he is very tall), and that was the ball game.  Don't get me wrong - I'm not down on Elton.  He had a monster game.  He led the Clippers comeback with a season-high 37.  It's just so much harder to go through a power forward when you need one bucket than it is to go through a wing.

In the final 3:25, McGrady made two tough jumpers in addition to the assist on the game-winner.

Still, following up a solid effort in San Antonio on Tuesday with this game has got to feel pretty good to the Clippers, despite the loss.  You would think that at this time of year, getting the win would be all that matters.  But the way the Clippers have played this season against good teams, these two games could really give them a boost of confidence.  The re-appearance of Elton Brand, stud, after a couple weeks missing is especially encouraging.

Of course it won't matter at all if they don't go to Charlotte and beat the Bobcats.  But there are three games on this trip against sub-.500 teams beginning Friday, and a fourth against a Bulls team that the Clippers beat in January.  If they play as well in the next four games as they have in these two, they can salvage a decent trip.

And the other teams keep on losing.  The Kings lost to those same Bobcats Wednesday night to remain a game behind the Clippers.  But Golden State is now the team to worry about, and they have taken a .002 percentage point lead over the Clippers in the standings by virtue of sitting on their butts the last two days while everyone else was losing.  The race for the 8th spot is ludicrously close (and simply ludicrous for that matter).  The Warriors are currently in 8th place and they have 36 losses.  The Clippers and Wolves actually have FEWER losses (35) and the Kings and Hornets have the same number.  All 5 teams are within a game of each other in the standings.

Whichever team can catch fire (or possibly just run a slight temperature) can make the playoffs.

If the Clippers who went to Texas continue to show up at other arenas around the NBA, it ought to be them.

I missed the whole game,
but the box score indicates that Kaman may have outplayed Yao in this one.

The best Kaman stat of all is the 0 turnovers.

EB was a monster and led the charge.

This was yet another game when the lack of quality point guard play has hurt.

I believe that having Cassell last night down the stretch would have put the Clippers over the top (the Ewing turnover was brutal).

If Sam can get into rhythym over the next week, I like the Clips chances of getting in.

Ewing...
The Ewing turnover was indeed brutal.  Skip made him look like one of the guys on the 'other' team in an And-One Streetball game.  I didn't bring it up in my recap because the Clippers got right back to the same point about 40 seconds later when Maggette drew the charge on Yao - up one with the ball.  Also, Cassell has had two similar turnovers (8 second count in the playoffs, steal by JR Smith in November) in recent Clipper history, so it's a little unfair to isolate that one play.  But I've said it for awhile now - the Clippers won't qualify for the playoffs unless Casell gets back and close to right.  Hart/Ewing won't do it.

While we're there, how about that Maggette play?  A perfect defensive rotation from a guy continually berated for his poor rotations.  I really thought that one was the game winner.  Too bad.

Kaman was great.  He blocked shots, he scored he rebounded, and the 0 turnovers as you point out.  It was his three-point play that tied the game, and his steal that led to Maggette's three point play for the lead.

Like I said, it (finally) felt a little like the 05-06 Clippers.

two straight games of Clipper ball
it only took four months to shake off the Moscow rust.

Sam's 8 second count vs. the Suns was bizarre.  I place most of the blame for that on the bench.  Somebody has to remind Sam that he only has 6 seconds.  Nobody did.

The JR Smith steal was Sam being stupid and trying to draw a foul.  Joey Crawford wasn't buying it.

Ewing had a nice game otherwise, but it was a bad time to have your pocket picked.  Happens to everyone at some point.

Corey's fast break lay-up And-1 was something special.  Dunleavy's new favorite player.

EB.  Awesome.  That last dunk around Yao was like last year.  We need to see more of that.

Correcting myself...
Kaman's steal led to Kaman's tying three point play - Maggette's three point play for the lead came when Brand blocked Yao, Mobley tied him up for the jumpball, and then Maggette stole the tap - another huge play.

Cool Standings update
After the events of last night, the Clippers are now an ever so slight favorite to take that 8th.  Not a bad night all around.

What makes Kaman show up against the better centers and fade against average competition?  I would like to commission a study.

it may be the constant ridicule
Yao owned Chris last year, but not so this year.

He needs to spend a summer learning how to kick it back out when he is doubled.

Warriors
Cool Standings is ignoring the fact that the Warriors are undefeated with Baron Davis and Jason Richardson healthy.  I mean, I assume the Warriors will find a way to lose, but right now they are the one team playing well.

Remaining schedules
The contenders play each other many times still and I can't pick one schedule out of GSW, SAC, LAC, MIN or NOOCH that I would want to face above the rest.  Should be a fun stretch run.

Definetly reminisant...
oh how I yearn for the good ol' days of last season!

Besides C Billups, what other PGs will be FAs next season?

by Lawler's Law on Mar 15, 2007 6:41 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

FA PG's
To answer your question...  Billups, Mo Williams, Chucky Atkins and Smush Parker are the point guard free agent.  Not a lot to choose from after Mr. Big Shot and Williams.  Also, Earl Boykins has a player option he could opt out of.  Travis Diener will be a restricted free agent, but should be available since Orlando has Nelson AND Arroyo AND Dooling AND Redick.  Charlie Bell is also an RFA, but he's really a 2 guard, though he played some 1 last season.  I may do a full post on this subject soon if this season gets out of hand.
