Clipper Darrell

NPR's Marketplace did a story today on Mark Cuban's recruitment of Clipper Darrell to Dallas.  For the story, reporter Jeff Tyler interviewed me via phone for my impressions as a Clippers fan.

I was a little disappointed that there was no mention of ClipsNation.com in the piece - I've desperately been trying to reach the tweedy economist demographic, and Marketplace is the perfect entree.  But on the upside, the editing of the piece made it seem as if I had pertinent and salient things to say, which is a welcome if unexpected bonus.

Unfortunately, the old joke about having a 'face for radio' may apply here.  I'm afraid I have a 'voice for blogging.'

In the small world department, our friend Kevin from ClipperBlog is an editor for Marketplace and worked on the Clipper Darrell segment.

As for the status of the 'Darrell to Dallas' negotiations, according to Art Thompson's OCR blog the Mavericks have made an offer which Darrel is considering.  Maybe the Clippers can get a draft pick in return.

FWIW
I don't think I said a million, I think I said that I'd do it if Cuban paid me enough.  You notice that it wasn't a direct quote from me.

But yes, I can be bought.

Clipper Darrell
The article says that no salary has been mentioned. Maybe I'm old-school, but an offer w/o a salary is not an offer.
Beyond that, I'll repeat what I said elsewhere -- CD's charm (which does wear thin) is that he's an unpaid volunteer, a grassroots supporter. Paying somebody to do his shtick is the sports version of astroturfing.

The whole thing is crazy...
Considering the expense of relocation, what is the length of Darrell's contract?  Does he uproot is family, and then a year later he's out of that 'job'?  The fact that he has his own business makes it a little more feasible than someone quitting their 'real' job, but still.  Cuban would have to offer so much more than it's 'worth' (in relocation, in guarantees, etc.) for it to make sense.  Of course it would be the first time Cuban paid more than something is worth (see Dampier, Erick).
