Blazers 82 - Clippers 80
The Clippers shot 31% in this game - their worst shooting night of the season, and we're talking about the 28th team in the NBA in shooting percentage. And still they had a chance to take the lead in the final seconds. Which doesn't make sense.
The Clippers got 1 point from 48 minutes of point guard play. If the post-Cassell era has indeed begun, this does not bode well.
In the first half, three Clipper starters were scoreless, and top reserve Al Thornton had 2 points. The first half was just a brutal, brutal 24 minutes of basketball. From 4:43 in the first until 5:37 of the second (over 11 minutes) the Clippers did not make a field goal, missing 17 in a row. And although the offense looked terrible against the zone, they still managed to get some very good shots, that they simply bricked. Josh Powell airballed a fast break layup. They missed four or five two footers. And at least three wide open jumpers were left so short that they barely grazed the rim. Sitting in Staples, I knew it was bad; but I didn't quite comprehend how bad. When I checked the field goals made and attempted on the score board, I was shocked. They were 8 for 34 (23.5%)! And that was after three straight makes! Before that they were 5 for 31 (16%).
Cuttino Mobley finished the game with 5, for a team playing without four of their best players. Basically, he was one of two regulars on the floor, and he might as well not have been there.
And still, the Blazers were able to match their ineptitude. It took the Clippers all of 7:32 of barely acceptable basketball to tie the game in the second half.
Corey Maggette scored 28 of the Clippers first 55 points. 15 of those points had come on 18 free throws, the last 12 of them consecutive makes. But he only scored 4 points in the 4th, making the only 2 shots he got from the offense prior to the closing seconds (he also missed a tip in on an offensive rebound).
For the Blazers the story was Jarrett Jack. He scored 13 of their 24 points in the fourth quarter, including the crucial jumper with 18 seconds in the game and 3 on the shot clock. Watching Dan Dickau, all 180 pounds of him, trying to 'fight' over the top of screens is just sad. It's not fair. He bounces around like Raggedy Andy in a dryer. It's not his fault really. You know how your dad tells you about the screens Wes Unseld used to set? How big and forceful and wide those screens were? Every screen looks like that when you're Dan Dickau. Channing Frye looks like Wes Unseld when you're Dan Dickau.
I like Dickau. He was one of the best college players I've even seen. But his body doesn't match his game, and he's just at an incredible disadvantage. Obviously the coaches want him to fight over the top of that screen, or he wouldn't try it over and over and over again. But he can't do it. He just can't.
I haven't watched any replays on the TiVo yet. I have no opinion of whether Thornton should have gotten three free throws (although my general bias against Joey Crawford tells me he should have - the more demonstrative and forceful Joey is with his call, the more likely it is that he's wrong); I have no opinion on whether Maggette was fouled with 5 seconds left.
Not that any of it matters. Losses are not a bad thing right now.
Hard to call this a quality loss though. There was very little of quality in this game.

Don't Resist
Portland looked horrible. Wonder where Truehoop is on all of this. The Rockets and Blazers loss will inevitably by the Nuggets and Warriors gain.
It was a challenge for the Clippers to come up with the loss, despite the gaping hole caused by Kaman's absence. The Clips really look like a JV team without Kaman in there, although there's going to be an inevitable amount of production from Maggette-Thornton-Thomas-Mobley, which is how they found themselves playing for the win at the end. Losing Brandon Roy really hurts Portland I guess.
Is it the first week of March yet? Shouldn't we be getting closer on Brand and maybe Livingston? And now Kaman? It's torture to watch this team, primarily because you have to question your sanity for taking a keen interest in a team that is so depleted and pathetic. But shouldn't there be an upswing pretty soon?
Very glad that Dunleavy didn't find any minutes for shooter and new guy Fazekas last night, especially when the Clips were lighting it up in the 2nd quarter. After your team misses 17 straight shot, it doesn't cross your mind to say hey, didn't we sign this new guy because he's supposed to be a good shooter? I think the problem with playing Fazekas was that the rotation started with Aaron Williams, who once again did absolutely nothing. Powell and Thornton come in, and Thomas takes up his share of minutes and does just enough to keep the team sub-semi-respectable, which seems to be all we're supposed to expect. Why not start Thomas and Thornton, or Powell and Thomas, and try giving Fazekas some space in the rotation? Of course you can say that he just joined the team that afternoon, but Richie Frahm got immediate minutes in a similar situation. Kaman is going to come back, and then Brand, and then Fazekas will be playing behind Thomas, Thornton, and Powell all over again. But maybe he'll get a few minutes down the road, we'll see.
And while I'm grouchy, Sam Cassell isn't handling his situation especially well. The Clippers don't owe him anything. Yes, he vastly improved the team two years ago, but he was rewarded with a generous contract. His performance under that new contract has been disappointing, primarily because of his injuries. That was part of the risk of signing an older player. But he doesn't deserve a reward for being injured. He's been paid well and hasn't done very much. If he had had a great year last season and got the team into the playoffs, it might be a different story. I want Sterling to hold out and win this one. If Sam wants to get paid he can stay. If he wants to try to win, it's going to cost him some money.

as usual...
As I mentioned, I had the good seats last night (4th row, opposite the Clippers bench). Rory White was sitting next to Fazekas, talking to him the whole time. I felt sure we'd see him in the second. Because, um, well, why not put me in if your going to miss 17 straight? Oh that's right, I'm not on the roster. But Fazekas is. Hard to figure how he doesn't get SOME burn in that game.
See below for more on Cassell and Sterling. I don't think he should have to walk away from ALL the money. It's not about owing him - it's about David Falk and Elton Brand. The mistake was not trading him - don't compound it by pissing off everybody.

Sam Cassell
Why would anyone come play for the Clippers with the way they are treating a popular vet in Cassell? The Clippers had a chance to trade him, but blew it. Just let him go.

Down boy...
Having said that, it's a delicate situation and your point is well taken. Not trading him was stupid. If the Clippers now come away from the buyout looking cheap, then they will confirm the age-old 'Cheap and stupid Clippers' cliche which they had in practice begun to dispel.
Asking Sam to walk away from all of the money is not right, imho. Having said that, he'll probably still do it. But if I was an adviser to Andy Roeser and Donald Sterling (which I'm not) I'd urge them to take the long view. Forget theoretical future free agents. David Falk is Elton Brand's agent. Do you really want to treat Sam badly in this situation?
It's a game of chicken I doubt the Clippers can win. If Sam hangs onto the money, now you've got a pissed off 38 year old in your locker room. Trust me, he won't be helping win those March games if he's in a Clipper uni.
Give him some money, bring in someone from the D-League (some one over 6'0", preferably) and go from there.

Clips have all the power
Heck Falk, if you want it that bad, have Sam sell EB one of his cars for 1.7 million and accept the 0 dollar buyout.
If the NBA is that corrupt, screw it all anyway.
If Sam refuses or is "unable" to perform for the rest of the season, the new CBA has ways to deal with that too. And even if he pouts on the court, could he be worse than Knight/Dickau last night? And even THEN, losses don't really matter anyway.
And finally, wouldn't not leaving for free shatter everything we are supposed to believe about Sam Cassell?
I'd rather let it be known that if you want to rent a Clipper for a playoff run you have to pay. There is further power to be gained there. Extending EB for the maximum should pretty much kill any leftover notions of those cheap old Clippers.
AND if EB does walk, screw it. Now the Clippers have cap space. Then I can justify a youth movement to myself.
PLAY TO WIN.

If EB and Corey do walk for less money
Corey is more likely to walk because of his disdain for MDSr. But if EB leaves, nobody is coming near this place.

I think the money is only available for EB
Besides, who else is there?
In my heart of hearts, I believe Brand will stay put for the reasons CS mentions above, as well as the fact that this is where movies are made.

Only cause I love this stuff so much
The Clippers HAVE to spend 75% of the cap, so like 42mil. But even DTS knows he should blow out the dough to spend for a superstar. Even one that wouldn't really make the team more competitive like ol' Zero. 20mil and another chance to come home? Would the Wizards match that?
In the sickest way, its almost better if BOTH Dukies leave if Maggette is going to leave for nothing. Almost.
Then there are sign-and-trades, blah blah blah.
All that said, with this buyout its all but assumed at least EB will be back.
