Clippers Sign Andre Barrett

The Clippers have signed point guard Andre Barrett from the D League.  Here's the press release:

At the time the Clippers waived Sam Cassell, it was reported that they were going to sign Flip Murray who had been waived by Detroit.  That never made a lot of sense to me - as a 28 year old scorer whose been around the league some, Flip made sense for a team that still had a shot at the playoffs, but not a lot of sense for the Clippers necessarily.  Teams have tried to make Flip into a point, but he's not.  And the Clippers need a point.  Certainly Flip would rather play for a team with playoff aspirations.  And indeed, he has signed with the Pacers (yes, the Pacers are a potential playoff team - ladies and gentleman, I give you the Eastern Conference).

I like Barrett better for the Clippers anyway.  I was chatting with Matt from Hardwood Paroxysm the other day (who as you may know, is a bit of a D League junkie) and he was all over Barrett.  And although I'm not a big fan of Big East basketball, I remember the dude at Seton Hall and he's a stud.

There's a small problem with Barrett.  He's 5'10".  Bringing to three (out of three) the number of Clipper point guards who are teeny tiny by NBA standards.  

Still, the guy is worth a look.  He's been tearing up the D League, and in particular shooting the three very well this season (almost 46%).  And although he is small, he's built more like a corner back, where Dickau is built more like an accountant.  And as I mentioned, Matt likes him - so there's that.

As the press release states he's had a cup of coffee with 5 other NBA teams in three seasons - and he's actually been in training camp with two more.  So he's probably one of those guys who's never quite going to stick.  But here's hoping he turns out to be one of those Mario Elie, Darrell Armstrong feel good stories about the guy who perseveres and finally makes it as a productive NBA player.
