Clippers 102 - Sonics 84

Generic no more!

I mentioned in the preview that I was going to the Viewing Party in Commerce.  I had the inside scoop from Citizen Jessie that the entire Spirit team was going to be there because they were having their last rehearsal of the season, so I figured this was the one to attend.

The mood of ClipsNation lately is very somber, I can tell you that much.  I don't make it to many of these viewing parties, but the group I sat with told me they're usually pretty packed.  At tip off tonight, there were 7 of us.  (Hi Tim, hi Steve, hi Kelly, hi Veronica, hi Sheila, hi other guy whose name I forgot.)  In all, a total of 12 fans showed up.  (On the plus side, everyone who showed up won something in the raffle - literally.  And with 17 members of the Spirit there, the odds of chatting up a pretty girl were quite good.)  But even so, everyone was bummed about the sparse turnout.  I theorized that the Kaman injury was kind of the last straw for most fans.  We've all been hanging on, in anticipation of when Kaman and Brand would play together, and with Kaman out the reality that the one thing we were looking forward to wasn't happening, it was just too much.  So our little band settled in to watch some dreary basketball, between a team playing one of it's final games in the only city it's ever known, and a team without 4 of it's projected starters.  The vibe was decidedly downbeat.

And then we saw EB in uniform and everything changed.

When he put up his first shot and it was flat and short, I thought he was going to struggle.  But maybe that one was just nerves, because he looked just fine the rest of the game.  Conditioning didn't really seem to be an issue - he played 26 minutes, and looked best in the fourth quarter when he played all but the final minute and helped the Clippers break open a close game.  Everything got better with him on the court.  Offense, defense, intangibles, tangibles.  MDsr became a better coach.  Ralph and Mike were better announcers.  Jasen Powell was a better trainer.  The uniforms even looked better.  It was like when Dorothy landed in Oz and suddenly everything was in color.

19 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and a block in 26 minutes is a good day's work for an All Star who's been playing every day.  For the first game in 11 and a half months, it's ridiculous.

I suppose I could say a few more things about the game.  The rookie battle was pretty good.  Durant (30) scored more than Thornton (21), but took more shots to do it, but Thornton complemented his scoring with 10 rebounds.  So that was good.

But seriously, who really cares?  EB's back, and that's the whole story.  Some other day we can talk about EB and Thornton together, and the possibilities there.  Or how Fazekas continues to produce.  But this game is all about the return of EB.  And the Clippers are undefeated with him in the lineup.

How do you like eet?  I'm rather pleased with myself, especially considering I woke up this AM with no idea what I was going to put there.  This may be T-Shirt worthy.

Me likey...
But which should it be?

Novus Ordo Brandum would be New Order for Brand, more or less.

Novus Brandum Sectorum would be New Brand for the Ages.

Wikipedia says
New Order of the Ages.  I'm hoping the New Order of Brand that just started will be similarly epic.

3 games of over-achievement and counting!

The good ol' days
Yes, this was definitely a treat for the Clips Nation.  Seeing Brand back to his old self was actually like walking down memory lane.  Thornton played well again standing his ground against the soon-to-be ROY.  There is definitely light at the end of the tunnel now.  It really is amazing how a great player like EB can transform mediocre NBAers like Q and Dan Dickau into valuable, winning role players.

Anyway, for reminiscent purposes, it is good to see Brand and Maggette on the floor again, if maybe for the last 8 games.  The re-signing of them after their rookie contracts essentially marked the beginning of a new era for the Clips where winning would be taken seriously.  The two of them have been the longest tenured on the team and have led the Clips from mediocrity to respectability.  If this is it for Maggette, it's been a fun ride.

I love LAC.

Turned on the Tivo
...and to my surprise it was Xmas eve. I felt like a giddy schoolboy. It really does seem like we have a "Brand" new team. Now I absolutely can't wait for training camp to open, with Kaman and Livingston and the lottery pick in the mix. Good times, finally.

I have to admit I'm beginning to like Fazekas too. I never thought I'd see any player in the L that runs as awkwardly as Gheorge Muresan did. But boy, Fazekas is somehow effective.

Marcus Williams needs to step up the intensity. The kid looks like he's just cruising out there. The better he performs, the less Smush I have to endure.

In a night of players returning from injury
Agent Zero scored 17
Dirk scored 18
Pau had 10

EB easily wins with his 19

It's a Brand new ball game!
I only saw a few minutes of the fourth quarter. Watching EB out there was like someone lifting a weight of my chest.
When the ball went into the wing I knew something good would happen and it did.
Then the fantasy began, suppose we get K2.5 or > next year. Thornton continues to progress, Shuan comes back strong and can knock down the open J, the ping pong balls go our way ect............

Who knows. At least I want to watch the Clippers again. Now all I have to do is to convince my Clipper widow that watching the last 7-8 minutes of a Clipper game vs the Sonics is more important than finding out who got kicked off American Idol.

Truly Amazing ...
What a difference a Brand makes!
But now you'll have to change your header again, after just changing back from I (heart) Kobe!
At least you'll be doing it with a smile!
Is there a limit on exclamation points?!

What a feeling!
Unlike CS at the casino, the Zhiv family was out and I was home alone, smiling and happy and standing up to give EB a standing ovation as he walked onto the court.  I just love the guy.  What an awesome basketball player.

So here are some points from the game:

--um, did anybody get the sense that EB could have put in that "4 minute" appearance that Ralph and Mike kept talking about, like a month ago?  Or maybe even two months ago, if the Clips had been in contention?  He was slightly rusty, but he was as effective as ever.  The point, of course, is that somehow, with a very talented roster, the Clips only have 23 wins on the season and will get a top 7 draft pick.  What we saw last night was the ultimate expression of a very sophisticated tank job.  Everybody who said that the season was lost before it started and calling for a tank at the beginning of the season should be happy.  I'm even happy, now that I've made it through the endless desert march and finally got a drink of water.

--I just wish that Mike Smith, and to a lesser extent Ralph, was more sophisticated and slightly less disingenuous about EB's injury.  Mike keeps talking about how amazing EB's comeback is, and how the injury has always season-ending.  That's because it almost always happens during the season, not two months before it starts.  And he should mention how resting it (as Thomas is apparently doing now, and Brand did after the Toronto game last year) can be a longer, dicier recovery in some ways than having the surgery.  Be smarter, Mike Smith.

--Love Fazekas.  Now he's made it to being the 2nd and 4th quarter guy.  Would like to see him start alongside EB and try out Kaman's role before we're through.  I've now seen him play two very nice, effective games, and I still haven't seen him take a perimeter shot, which is supposed to be a specialty.  His touch is great around the basket, and his free throws even had an amazing swish to them.  It seems like he would be a great backup to Kaman.

Re:
See what good hands can do for an un-athletic big man. In the post I'd rather have good hands then the athletic ability of a Kwame Brown.

I'd rather have both...
But bad hands are a death sentence.  You can't play basketball if you don't have good hands.

'Wooden Hands'
Not a reference to the UCLA coach -- Keith Erickson, talking about Wilt Chamberlain's foray into volleyball, said that Wilt could never be great because he had 'wooden hands.'
I'm too young to recall Wilt's game well, except he did use the finger roll a lot, I think. But I'm wondering how good his hands were in basketball.

Huh
Were they asking him to set?

by John R on Apr 3, 2008 1:33 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Wilt is not only one of the best b-ball players
of all time, he is also one of the best athletes period.  He was a sprinter and a super-marathon runner (not a whimpy 26-mile marathon, but a 100-mile super-marathon).

He was very coordinated, as seen in his run with the Globetrotters, stong as an ox, and a great character in Conan.

Oh, and his hands looked good to me.

Wilt
My recollection is that Wilt's athleticism was completely off the charts, especially in the early days.  His hands weren't so great, but during his salad days they didn't need to be, because nobody could touch him.  He was not just bigger and stronger, but also more athletic, so he got every single rebound, and he was also the only guy on the court who was playing above the rim.  The only guy. His basic flow within the game was a little rough, and there was a lot of brute force.  Jabbar was the first giant who had real finesse and game flow.

I didn't see him much, but I think Russell must have had great hands, to go with incredible timing and an amazing wingspan.  Russell got so deep into Wilt's head that it isn't funny.  I haven't read it, but from what I hear, the gist of Wilt's entire autobiography is an argument about his superiority over Russell, one of those one-sided rants.

By the time he got to the Lakers, Wilt was well past his prime, but he was crafty, and still a massive rebounder.  Pretty good comparison to Shaq now going to Phoenix, and Shaq and Wilt are pretty comparable in general.  I think Wilt was a little leaner and faster than Shaq, slightly more athletic, while Shaq was more of a widebody and bulky, even when he was young and in fantastic shape.  And of course Shaq was playing against a ton of skilled and massive big men, and was still in a class by himself.  The disparity between Wilt and the competition was just ridiculous.

And Wilt didn't play volleyball until he was finishing basketball--kind of like Shaq getting in shape running around with Phoenix, and starting to play volleyball now.  If Wilt had played volleyball in his athletic prime, he would have been ridiculous.

Wilt was also funkin' it up pretty nicely from the very beginning, going with the goatee very early on.  Another good comparison:  the Elvis of basketball players.  Fantastic sports figure.

V-Ball and Basketball
It should also be noted that good hands in volleyball and good hands in basketball are very different things.

by Steve Perrin on Apr 3, 2008 4:02 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yes
As personified when my team played the Dominguez High team.  They were clearly the basketball team in long sleeve shirts.

Catching the serve and dunking it over the net was impressive to the crowd, but not really helping their cause.  I'm pretty sure we won 2 of the games 15-nil.

Of course had it been a basketball game, the results would have likely been as one-sided.

Both sports played above...something.  Both sports requiring athleticism and good hands.  But oh so very different.  Across the court is 6 guys who are supposed to be incredible athletes and coordination made flesh and they are completely powerless to stop you from literally smashing the ball into their faces, if you are so inclined.

The next two seasons the (other) Dons did not field boys volleyball teams.

Is EB eligible for 6th man of the year?

My apologies to Carlos.  I think I got everyone else at the table right!  Yeah, first half... chat up Taylor, watch basketball, chat up Taylor, watch basketball... It's a tough call.
