NBA Free Agency: Clippers Re-Sign Matt Barnes for Three Seasons

New, comments
US PRESSWIRE

According to multiple reports, the Clippers have reached an agreement with Matt Barnes on a three-year deal to stay in Los Angeles.

This deal eats up a large portion of the mid level exception, according to Marc Spears:

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p>Clippers forward Matt Barnes has agreed to a three-year deal with in the $11 million to $12 million range, a source told Yahoo! Sports.</p>&mdash; Marc J. Brad Turner, however, reports different numbers:

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p>Matt Barnes has agreed to a 3 year, deal worth between $9-$11 million to remain w/Clippers. The first two years are guranteed, sources.</p>&mdash; Brad Turner (@BA_Turner) <a href="https://twitter.com/BA_Turner/statuses/353245287684386817">July 5, 2013</a></blockquote>

The mid-level exception is worth 5.15 million, so this is a big difference. If Barnes is getting 9 over 3, then with raises he could be at around 2.5 or 2.6 this season, which gives the Clippers tons of flexibility this summer with the rest of their MLE. If it's 12 over 3 and flat, then the Clippers only have 1.15M left on the MLE, which is essentially the veteran's minimum. I'll need to do more careful math later to figure out exactly how it can break down.

Here's the announcement from Barnes himself:

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p>RT <a href="https://twitter.com/CP3">@CP3</a>: I&#39;M IN!!! <a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%23CLIPPERNATION&amp;src=hash">#CLIPPERNATION</a>... I guess that makes two of us!! Lets get this...</p>&mdash; Matt Barnes (@Matt_Barnes22) <a href="https://twitter.com/Matt_Barnes22/statuses/353241905439571971">July 5, 2013</a></blockquote>

This means that the Clippers are no longer players for Carl Landry.

LAC still has a small portion of the mid-level exception, a 1.7M TPE, and the non-guaranteed contracts of Maalik Wayns and DaJuan Summer as assets with which they can acquire new players. The Clippers are in need of a backup point guard and another backup big man.
