Clippers guard Austin Rivers will miss today’s game against the Charlotte Hornets with a sore left Achilles, the team announced Sunday afternoon. An MRI revealed no soft tissue or structural damage, and Clippers coach Doc Rivers said that Rivers could return as soon as Tuesday night’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies.
For at least one game, Rivers’ absence will put a dent in an LAC offensive attack that has relied on him heavily in December, where he has averaged an incredibly efficient 20 points per game. However, Blake Griffin’s recent return from injury will help alleviate the loss of Rivers.
Look for rookie guards Jawun Evans and Sindarius Thornwell to each see a little more action than normal in Austin’s absence. Wing players like C.J. Williams, Wesley Johnson, and Sam Dekker could also see a few extra minutes, with some small forward minutes freed up as the Clippers will likely use less three-guard lineups, and could even play Williams at shooting guard at times.
