Breaking: Jerry West to Join Clippers’ Organization

New, comments

Per a report from the (very) trusted Jack McCallum of Sports Illustrated, Jerry West will be joining the Clippers as a “special consultant”.

A story broke two weeks ago that the Clippers were trying to hire Jerry West, legendary NBA player and executive, away from the Warriors. That rumor has now become reality, as Jack McCallum of Sports Illustrated reported just a few minutes ago that West will join the Clippers in the same capacity he served for the Warriors— “special consultant”.

West was a Hall of Fame basketball player for the NBA Lakers (he is the logo, after all), and served as the GM of the Lakers for 20 years and Grizzlies for 10, winning Executive of the Year awards in 1985 and 2004. He was a special advisor to the Golden State Warriors from 2011 until just now, and was seen as a mentor and crucial factor in the team’s development. West’s presence was also a deciding factor in convincing Kevin Durant to join the Warriors last summer.

West will not have any official powers in the Clippers’ organization, but his wisdom and the respect he holds throughout the NBA should serve them extremely well.

Ramona Shelburne got a quote from West himself:

Just like the earlier news about the new stadium, this hire is a direct result of Steve Ballmer’s ownership and drive to win. He’s already done some great things for the Clippers, and his passion and energy continue to bring benefits in spades.

We will have more on this story as news develops. This is an incredibly exciting move for the Clippers, and hopefully we see the fruit from it as soon as this summer in free agency.
