Pierce, a veteran forward who previously won Finals MVP with the Boston Celtics, played poorly in two seasons with the Clippers. His retirement this summer was inevitable, but there was some question as to whether the Clippers would package his salary in a trade.
This morning, following the Chris Paul trade breaking, the Clippers and Pierce reportedly agreed to extend the guarantee date on his contract so that the team could trade him in an off-season move. Per his contract, Pierce is due $1,096,080 of his $3,679,840 if he is released by June 30th. However, following the news of Pierce’s release, it would seem that such an agreement either did not occur or that the Clippers could not find a suitable deal in which to include Pierce’s salary.
