The LA Clippers have agreed to a one year, $1.5M contract with free agent center Willie Reed, formerly of the Miami Heat and Brooklyn Nets. The deal was first reported by ESPN’s Chris Haynes, and appears to be a veteran minimum contract.
This is an excellent value deal for the Clippers, as Reed was one of the best available backup bigs on the market. He’ll fight with Montrezl Harrell and Brice Johnson for bench minutes behind Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan in what’s suddenly become a deep frontcourt rotation.
In 71 games last year with the Heat, Reed averaged 5.3 points and 4.7 rebounds in 14.5 minutes a game backing up Hassan Whiteside.
Reed played in the D-League for several seasons and had an overseas stint in the Dominican Republic before making it into the big leagues with the Nets in the 2015-16 season.
According to Haynes, Reed also received interest from the Golden State Warriors, while the Clippers previously pursued Dubs big man JaVale McGee.
