The Clippers signed Angel Delgado of Seton Hall to a two-way contract right after the draft, and he will be on their Summer League team in Las Vegas. Angel was probably happy to hear that he will already have one familiar face on the team, as teammate Desi Rodriguez will join him on the Clippers’ squad.
Rodriguez was a four year senior at Seton Hall, and started on the team for his last three. His points and assists per game increased every year he was on the team, leading the team in scoring his senior year with 17.5 per game in just 30.3 minutes. Desi also worked hard on his three-point shot during his collegiate years, moving from an abominable 8.3% mark his freshman year (on 0.4 attempts) to a solid 37.3% (on 4.8 attempts) in his last season.
A 6’6”, 215 pound wing, Desi is quite young for a senior, being just over 22 years old. A physical presence on the court, Desi actually went to the post a lot, especially his senior year, where he was able to bully smaller players and get to his spots. But in the NBA, Desi profiles primarily as a shooter, as he has a nice, smooth, quick lefty release, and is tall enough to shoot over most defenders.
Look for him to have some nice chemistry with Angel if they get minutes together in Vegas, and for Desi to try to showcase the rest of his game outside of shooting. While that outside shot is his main ticket to the NBA, he needs to demonstrate he can do more than the dozens of other college seniors who are capable outside shooters as well.
Desi is joining an increasingly full squad that likely includes Jerome Robinson, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Delgado, Robert Upshaw Jr., Bogdan Bliknyuk, Jawun Evans, and Sindarius Thornwell. Welcome to the Summer League Clippers, Desi!
Seton Hall's @desirodriguez6 has agreed to play with the Clippers in summer league, he tells me. It's the All-Seton Hall Squad. https://t.co/HKNdXPHawh
