The Clippers are 1-1 against the Grizzlies thus far this season, with a narrow win in late November and one of their worst losses of the season in January. The Grizzlies have been a good team since the opening weeks of the season, powered by their young core. However, a key member of that core, Jaren Jackson Jr., is out for this game, and will miss several weeks with a sprained knee. That’s bad news for the Grizzlies, whose hold on the 8th seed is slim and fading fast to the rising Pelicans. Rookie Brandon Clarke is a fantastic replacement for JJJ, but moving him to the starting unit will greatly weaken the Grizzlies’ bench.
The Clippers, too, are searching for wins, having lost three games in a row for the first time all season. The absences of Patrick Beverley and Paul George are weighing heavily on both ends, and the Clippers just can’t seem to find a rhythm. Their grasp on the 3rd seed is tenuous as well, and they can’t afford to drop more games or they will be surpassed by Houston and Utah. Of course, getting Bev and PG right is the most important thing, but sooner or later, the Clips need to start winning games. Tonight would be a good start.
