Ranking Clippers Jerseys (1984-2000)

The move to Los Angeles

Over the last week, I’ve been ranking Clippers jerseys from era-to-era. So far, we’ve gone over the uniforms worn from when then team was in Buffalo and San Diego.

Today, we shift our focus to the team’s first 15 years in Los Angeles. They had two designs and five jerseys overall. So, let’s get to these rankings!

No. 5 — Away red alternates

Let’s kick things off with these. I haven’t been able to figure out exactly what year or years they wore these, but it’s probably for the best.

I get and appreciate what they were going for here, but it simply didn’t work. The font looks horrible on these red jerseys, and it’s kind of difficult to fully read the words.

I like seeing Los Angeles on jerseys, but these ones are some the franchise should try and forget.

No. 4 — Away reds (1987-2000)

We move to a more familiar away jersey. You’ll be seeing this one again soon, and that’s because this was the Clippers road jersey after the jersey re-brand, with the exception of a few things.

Overall, I don’t really have a problem with these jerseys. I love the stripes on the side, but I can see why people wouldn’t like them. As I mentioned, it’s nearly the same as the road one they wore in the early 2000’s, which I loved as well. There are just a few others I like more than this.

No. 3 — Home whites (1984-1987)

The Clippers wore these jerseys when they first moved to Los Angeles. However, they were short-lived, as the team got completely new jerseys just a few seasons later.

Though they are pretty plain, I really like the design and look of these. I love the way Clippers is spelled out, along with how the numbers look too.

To me, it has a very old fashioned look, and I wish they would have kept these for a little longer. It would be nice to see the Clippers eventually use these as a throwback of some sorts, or come out with an updated version of them, I think it could really work.

No. 2 — Away blues (1984-1987)

As I’ve said previously, I’m a sucker for blue uniforms. These are some I would absolutely love to see the Clippers use as throwbacks sometime in the future. Everything about these uniforms was spot on.

The white font on the blue looks very clean, and the outline of blue and red on the jersey makes it pop that much more. You can’t really go wrong with red, white and blue, and the Clippers sure used those colors to their advantage with these ones.

No. 1 — Home whites (1987-2000)

If I had a list with my overall top five favorite Clippers uniforms, these would for sure crack the list. Though simple and basic, the Clippers rocked some of the best home uniforms in the NBA.

The red logo on the white jersey looks so nice, and it brings back great memories from games when I was younger. What helps separate this jersey are the stripes on the side and the outline. As I mentioned earlier, you can’t go wrong with red, white and blue, and boy oh boy do these look clean.

If the Clippers are going to rock any jerseys as a throwback from this era, it better be these!
