He had to wait nearly five months, but Doc Rivers achieved a milestone Saturday, as the LA Clippers’ 126-103 win over the New Orleans Pelicans was his 939th as an NBA head coach. That number means he passes Red Auerbach on the all-time coaching wins list, and moves to 11th all-time.
Considering Auerbach’s status as one of the legendary NBA coaches, and considering both he and Rivers have won NBA titles with the Boston Celtics, this win will probably be savored a bit more than some of the other ones, and to notch that many is certainly no small feat.
Beyond that, Rivers is not far at all from reaching the Top 10 — he’s now five wins behind Bill Fitch in 10th place, who has 944 career wins as a coach. It’s somewhat fitting that after passing a fellow Celtics head coach, Rivers could then pass a fellow Clippers head coach as he moves up the all-time list.
And while Rivers could conceivably pass Fitch during the seeding games in the NBA bubble in Orlando, with six games left in the pre-playoff slate, considering the league shut down for several months as he was on the cusp of passing Auerbach, you never know what will happen in life. But for now, congrats to Doc, and may the wins continue to pile up.
