The Clippers beat the Grizzlies 94-92 despite playing a Memphis style game. The Clippers changed the pace just enough to win.

Another ugly Clipper vs. Memphis game - shocker. Clippers fans may dislike the Warriors the most, but the Grizzlies are a very close second, and with good reasoning. Seemingly every single game against the Grizzlies is a physical, grind-it-out game. In the Clippers vs. Grizzlies head-to-head history, they have played a total of 77 games. In those games, the Clippers have won 39 to the Grizzlies 38. On average, the Clippers score 96.8 points-per-game. The Grizzlies average 96.6. Since Blake Griffin's rookie year the equality continues. The teams have played 32 games since 2010, with the Clippers winning 17 and losing 15. In 32 games, the Clippers outscored the Grizzlies by a total of 24 points - or a little over a half point-per-game. There is little separation between the teams, despite playing contrasting styles. However, each game in recent memory usually favors Memphis's style - a gritty game with a lot of whistle. Credit the Grizzlies for forcing the Clippers to adjust to the slower style. The Grizzlies normally play slow, and against the Clippers they take it to the extreme. On Monday the Grizzlies held the Clippers to 94 points, well under their season average. This edition of film room examines how the Grizzlies play so well against LA and how a short spurt in the third won the game for the Clippers.

A very sloppy Clippers team turned the ball over 12 times in the first half. Part of it was laziness and lack of mental acuteness, but part of it was a strong Grizzlies defense. Also, Lance Stephenson made a few great outlet passes to the Grizzlies in the first half, igniting their fastbreak.

Early in the first, Lance dribbles over the top and locates DeAndre Jordan trailing. You can see the moment Lance realizes he's passing to Jordan. All confidence disappears and basically stops moving. Its reminiscent of checking your fantasy football roster on a bad day - the effort just wasn't worth it. The duality of Lance appears in this play. Good Lance attacks the gap with confidence, sucking the defense in. The initial attack of Good Lance is promising, as those gaps will always exists when he plays with the starters. If Lance's outside shot isn't working, his ability to split the gaps makes him a threat. Lance gets two defenders to collapse on him.

The concept of the pass to Jordan isn't the worst. He's open and upon catching it, Jordan would have set a screen for Chris Paul in a two-on-one situation. Bad Lance questions himself, thinks negatively about his actions and realizes DeAndre really is out of his element that far away from the basket and gives up. Second-guessing and decision hesitation plague the Clippers, especially in late game scenarios. Confidence stems from repetition. Although Doc debatably (hopefully) is experimenting with lineups, the set rotations need to come soon. Players thrive knowing their niche, and all eight new players need role definition,

The Grizzlies aren't great in the fastbreak, but the Clippers recovered well and altered Grizzlies shots during the fastbreak. Even with the blunder by Bad Lance, DJ chases down Tony Allen for a Wilt Chamberlain-esque block. The Clippers held Memphis to a point-per-turnover, with only 9 fastbreak opportunities total. When the game is played so slow, chances are fewer. By turning the ball over so often, the Clippers gifted extra opportunities to a team that struggles to score.

A few minutes later, the Good Grizzlies Defense appear and Bad Lance reappears. The Grizzlies wonderfully ICE the screen-and-roll and force Jordan to set a ball-screen on the baseline side, which gives Lance little room. Operating in such a tight space, Marc Gasol easily contains both Lance and DJ. Baseline dribble drives substantially limit passing lanes of the ball handler. Memphis defenders shade both man and ball, not allowing any passing windows. Lance really has no good options. A pass to Redick in the corner surely would be a turnover. A skip pass to Paul across the middle is risky. Zach Randolph would steal a pass to Griffin. Lance forces an awkward lob to Jordan who can't reach the ball. The pass falls into the hands of Randolph and then the Grizzlies are running. Memphis defenders consistently located themselves perfectly between man and ball, forcing Clippers offensive execution to be perfect. Just because the Grizzlies #lostby50 doesn't mean they play horrendous defense.

The Clippers got lucky on Lance's second turnover. Courtney Lee, a career 38 percent three-point shooter, misses. JJ Redick satisfactorily closes out, but Lee had trouble getting his feet and body underneath him. Ralph Lawler and Mike Smith repeatedly mentioned the Grizzlies inability to hit open shots throughout the game. How to stop a fast break is a simple, execute well on offense, and the Clippers did not - partially because of Memphis schemes, and partly because of laziness.

The Grizzlies were great at disrupting Clipper sets and this play at 6:09 remaining in the first is a great example. David Joerger understands J.J. Redicks' significance for the Clippers offense and put Tony ‘FIRST TEAM ALL-DEFENSE' Allen on the shooter. The Griz employed a strategy of "Don't let Redick get loose," and denied passes his way throughout the game. Numerous Clipper sets start with an early pass to Redick, but Allen denies passes at an elite level. This strategy frequently delayed the Clippers offense, taking precious seconds of the shot-clock.

Watch Allen suction-cup to Redick's side after J.J. passes to Blake. The Clippers wanted to get Redick receiving a handoff on the run with Allen trailing. Usually defenders guard a little further back, giving J.J. enough room to get his defender trailing. Here, Allen impedes Redick's pass putting him between himself and the ball. Redick retreats, gets the pass and runs a traditional pick-and-roll with Griffin, which isn't Redick's strength. Redick is great using off-ball motion to create space, but the Grizzlies forced Redick to create with the ball.

Because the play took so long to develop, Courtney Lee recognizes the developing action. Not perceiving Lance's shot as a threat, Lee bolts towards a popping Griffin and intercepts Redick's pass transitioning for the easy layup.

Near the end of the second, the Clippers try to get Chris Paul open with two down-screens into a handoff from Jordan. This actually looks like manipulation to disguise the Clippers' Dribble Drag Pindown play. Blake sets up for a screen for Redick, alas, the play never gets that far. Beno Udrih realizes the ball is coming back to Paul and sticks to his side.

Paul's physicality on perimeter defense is unnatural, but when Paul gets bodied up, occasionally he reacts disproportionately. Paul attempts to sell the foul, slowing himself down. Udrih allows zero space to Paul, squeezes in-between ball-and-man, and doesn't allow the handoff. A frustrated Paul pushes Udrih, drawing an offensive foul.

By denying passes and slowing the game down, the Grizzlies forced the Clippers into predictable actions. In a modern day pace-and-space game, the ball whirls around quickly on offensive sets. The orthodox Grizzlies' approach modifies the timing players and plays accustom to. Halfcourt plays usually taking 5 seconds turned into 9 seconds on Monday. Instead of the game turning into a read and react style, it was a deliberate step-by-step approach.

With 2 minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Clippers broke free from the tyranny of slow-paced oppression. Down 64-60, the Clip Show exploded on a 14-2 run over the next 3 and half minutes.

Following an awkward Jamal Crawford isolation, a pesky Chris Paul hangs around the basket. Zero Clippers attack the offensive boards, and Chris doesn't either, but he hangs around. Although this seems fortuitous, as Zach Randolph tries to corrall the rebound, you can see him look at Paul - comparable to a wide receiver turning his head before catching the ball. Paul's presence coerces Randolph into fumbling the ball and falling over. Once Paul gathers the ball, a retreating Udrih has no shot at stopping a Chris Paul-Josh Smith two-on-one break.

With the shot-clock dwindling down and the Clippers playing small, the Grizzlies post-up the 6' 7'' ex-Clipper Matt Barnes over 6' 4'' Austin Rivers. Any Clipper could have predicted Matt Barnes's move, and Austin Rivers was just as prophetic. Barnes tries a drop step, but doesn't drop anywhere and shoots a contested jumper over Rivers. Josh Smiths grabs the board, throws a great lead pass to Rivers, who attacks the bucket and draws a foul.

Chris Paul methodically approaches each fastbreak. He excels at recognizing when the Clippers have greater numbers, but if the Clippers don't, he will slow down and set up the offense. Austin Rivers attacks with reckless abandon. Austin creates fastbreak chances that Paul doesn't. Austin forces the issue on the defense. Yes, he falls down more than anybody, but he speeds the game. His speed aided the Clippers in getting their biggest lead. Rivers used to be an NBA joke. This year, Rivers' solidified his role on a championship caliber team.

From 3:41 remaining in the third to 11:24 remaining in the fourth, the Clippers played Paul-River-Crawford-Pierce-Smith. Pierce and Smith guarded Randolph and Gasol, which seems like a mismatch defensively. However, this lineup went plus-6 in five minutes of play. The lineup changed the tempo. Instead of matching the Grizzlies slow style, the Clippers played the way they are used to - in the open court.

Here Crawford gets tested, put through a series of screens and handoffs. The final screen Smith hedges enough, forcing Mike Conley to hesitate. Rivers strips Conley during this moment of purgatory and excels the other way passing to a trailing Smith.

Not many matchups in the NBA feature such a profound difference in styles. When the Clippers play the Grizzlies, its almost obvious who will win judging by the style of the game. Monday, the Grizzlies played their style for 44 and half minutes but the Clippers just needed 3 and half minutes of theirs to win.

If there was a dumber game played in the NBA this evening, it certainly must never be seen by any pair of eyeballs. This game was poor all-around. Yet, somehow, the Clippers won by two points.

U-G-L-Y. You ain’t got no alibi, you ugly! Hey! You ugly! They don’t make many games like the one that was played tonight. Then again, it should be of no surprise that a game between the Los Angeles Clippers and Memphis Grizzlies turned into a repulsive display of basketball. These two teams struggle to play beautiful basketball against one another. Sometimes a game turns into a semi-blowout. Other times, like tonight, it turns into a quest to see which team can stop retching long enough in order to pull out a victory. This game was like the scene in the new Bond film, Spectre, where the villain is – oh, there should be a spoiler alert here. Anyways, it was painful! But, hey, at least it was a win. That always makes something ugly look prettier.

This game featured a slew of horrific possessions by each team that either resulted in turnovers or terrible shots heaved towards the rim with the accuracy of a paper airplane in a hurricane. The fact these two teams even are allowed to play in the same association as others is quite the mysterious thing to ponder right now. We need to start from the beginning, though, because there was so much that happened and there’s so little time to get through it all.

Our loveable Los Angeles team came out of the gates in the first quarter pretty horribly. They trailed by as much as 6 points prior to Jamal Crawford getting fouled on a three-point attempt and sinking all three free throws. The quarter ended with the team going on a 7-2 run to close the gap to a single tally. The second quarter was a lot more easy going for the first half of it as the Clippers surged ahead by 6 points after Chris Paul knocked down a trey. However, that lead would not last as Memphis took a 2-point lead into the closing seconds. And then Crawford went to the line and tied the game going into halftime.

A quick 6-0 run by the Grizzlies started off the second half and the Clippers really had nothing going until J.J. Redick hit a tough jumper to get them on the board. That’s when the slugfest started. That jumper started a 7-0 Clippers run, and the two sides engaged in a back-and-forth affair for the rest of the quarter. With just under three minutes to go, Memphis took a 4 point lead. However, that didn’t last long. The Clippers closed the quarter on a 10-2 run which was capped off by a Crawford corner three on a beautiful Josh Smith assist. The good guys went into the final frame up by 4 points themselves, and then the fun started.

The Clippers pushed the lead up to a game-high 8 points before Memphis used a 6-0 run – which featured a stupid Paul Pierce flagrant foul, where Pierce pushed Jeff Green in the back as Green was running full speed and jumping – to cut it back down to 2. Memphis was called for their own flagrant foul shortly after when Marc Gasol swatted Blake Griffin clear across the face. Nothing malicious about it, but rather a hard foul that was only a flagrant because it involved contact to the head. The Clippers lead then grew to 4, and that’s where it stayed for the most part until just under 5 minutes to go.

With the game coming to a close, former Clipper Matt Barnes nailed a three and Mike Conley made a layup after Barnes botched a fast break dunk to put Memphis back in the lead. Then the team’s three biggest offensive weapons showed up. Blake Griffin made a tough contested layup, Chris Paul hit a mid-range jumper, and J.J. Redick hit a three with just under one minute to go to give the Clippers a single point lead. With 15 seconds to go, Redick got fouled shooting a three, and made all three to push the lead to 4. The game was over. Or so we thought.

Matt Barnes got fouled – somewhere – on a three-point attempt by Chris Paul, made all three free throws, and suddenly the Grizzlies were back down just one. From there, the team just simply had to make free throws and be smart with their strategy. Crawford nailed two free throws to push the lead to 3, and then they had Griffin foul Gasol to avoid any chance of a game-tying three-point attempt. Gasol missed the first, made the second, and then the Clippers went to the line to ice it for good. And then they didn’t.

Crawford missed the first, made the second, and Griffin fouled Gasol intentionally again with the team up 3. Gasol made the first, but he missed the second intentionally only to get his own rebound and get fouled again. Down by 2 points, Gasol sank the first. With 3.5 seconds to go and trailing by 1 point, Gasol promptly missed the second one, Chris Paul got the rebound, and got fouled. Smartly, with 0.3 seconds to go, Paul missed the last free throw and the game ended without any chance for Memphis to tie or win. The Clippers, somehow, won this game.

It’s easy to say that the Clippers don’t win this game without Chris Paul, considering he finished with 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists, but it goes far beyond anything measured in statistics. He was the steady hand the Clippers needed down the stretch. He and Blake Griffin showed up in the game’s biggest moments. Griffin finished with 24 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block. The team’s two highest-profile players displayed why they’re so tough for opponents when the team needed them to do so. Huge game for each guy, even if the stats don’t show it fully for Paul.

Special hat tip to J.J. Redick for his performance, as well. 16 points on 8 shots is incredible, but it went far beyond that. Tony Allen suffocated Redick a ton in the first half, which is the reason Redick only had one single shot attempt in the game’s opening 24 minutes. Yet, in the fourth quarter and with the game on the line, Redick nailed a huge three to give the Clippers the lead and sank all three free throws after getting fouled on a three to further expand their lead. You can always count on the man to show up.

The other piece of the big four, DeAndre Jordan, seemed like he was sleepwalking through the entire game. There was some talk that certain members of the team were dealing with the flu or something of the sort. No idea if Jordan was, but he did have 13 points and 12 rebounds, as well as 4 blocks, on 6-of-9 shooting. Incredibly, despite that stat line, it seemed like he was simply out of it tonight. These types of games happen from time to time so there’s nothing really to take away from it. If he plays lackluster and has a double-double with multiple blocks, can you really be all that mad?

Honorary starter at small forward Lance Stephenson went just 1-of-4 from the field, finished with 3 points, had 3 rebounds, and 1 assist in 20:56. The problem for Stephenson in this game was that he had 4 turnovers and looked utterly atrocious at certain times. This was Bad Lance tonight. Attitude was fine, but the play was not. He’s trying out there. The issue, though, is that sometimes he tries far too hard. That might have been the case tonight.

The bench was hit-and-miss tonight. Austin Rivers supplied 9 points on 4 shots, as well as a nice assist to Jordan for a dunk and 2 steals. Rivers played exceptionally well tonight when he was on the floor. Give him credit. Jamal Crawford led the bench in scoring with 13 points on 7 shots. He still took some poor shots and played some lazy defense, but at least he got to the free throw line and attacked the rim. So, there was that.

Among the other bench pieces, Josh Smith was 0-of-2 yet had 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 blocks. Smith is offensive to the senses on offense right now, but his defense against Memphis was pretty spot-on quite a lot of the time. Credit to him. Paul Pierce looked bad. He was 0-of-5 from the field and 0-of-4 from three, but it went far beyond the shutout in the scoring column. The guy was being beaten repeatedly by Jeff Green whenever the two were on the court and Pierce’s steep decline early in the year is noticeable. There was really only a 9-man bench rotation as Wesley Johnson only played 70 seconds and Luc Mbah a Moute played 15 seconds.

Honestly, it seemed like Doc Rivers coached this game pretty flawlessly for a lot of the duration. He never really left the entire bench out there by themselves all that much, minus a couple minute stretch in the first half, and seemed like he understood rotations better. Yes, it’s only the seventh game of the season but any positive sign is, well, a positive sign. The only issue might be playing Pierce 24:34 when he clearly wasn’t doing much, but one issue at a time. This was a really good job done by the head coach tonight. Especially with the late-game fouling.

Give a ton of credit to the Memphis Grizzlies tonight. They came into this game riding a two-game losing streak and playing some abysmal basketball. Tonight, they mucked it up much in their Grit-and-Grind style, and it forced the Clippers into a horribly flowed game that fit Memphis’ style much more than Los Angeles’. Zach Randolph led the way with a game-high 26 points, most of which were mid-range jumpers that the Clippers let him take at will. They gave him something and he tortured them with it.

On the flip side, despite having 18 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists in 37:05, Marc Gasol played a pretty spotty game. The crucial free throw misses notwithstanding, Gasol let Jordan score on a post-up against him and looked like he had no idea what he was doing half of the time. It’s hard to even say whether or not Gasol is in-shape. He’s sort of just there. And that sucks.

Mike Conley had 16 points on 15 shots, Tony Allen had 6 points on 6 shots, and Courtney Lee had 6 points on 6 shots. It’s hard to win games when the other three members of your starting lineup combine for nearly as many shots as points. Their bench didn’t play much better, as they only connected on 7-of-26 shots. Their bench is putrid, but they were without some key players on that end. Former Clipper Matt Barnes was a bright spot as he finished with 8 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 blocks in 26:17. It was nice to see him again.

Memphis’ lack of outside shooting is killing that team. They only attempted 11 threes, making just 2 of them. To put it bluntly, it’s hard to win games and pull away when you can’t hit threes. It’s almost a prerequisite in the NBA right now. They did a really good job of running the Clippers off of the three-point line all night, giving up just 19 attempts, but having 11 yourself is never good. The Grizzlies won’t change their fur, but perhaps they need a facelift.

PARTING SHOTS

According to early Player Tracking data from SportVU, the Clippers shot just 37.9 percent (11-of-29) on uncontested shots in this game. The team simply struggled. But, as mentioned, they pulled a win out and that’s all that matters at the end of the day. The other blemish is that they turned the ball over 18 times and allowed Memphis to score 18 points off of them. How do you help a team that’s worse than you stay in the game? Turnovers. The Clippers did that tonight. Have to clean that up.

As of right now, the good news is that the team is 5-2 and has played in quite a few close games lately. They’re getting all the experience they need late in tough games. Probably more than they would want at this point in time. Perhaps that will pay off later on in the season. It seems like the Golden State Warriors are going to run roughshod over the Western Conference again, so keeping up with a team like the San Antonio Spurs for the all-important second seed will be of the utmost importance.

Up next, the team gets to travel to Texas and play the Dallas Mavericks in DeAndre Jordan’s first game back in the state since his flip-flopping. The good news for the Clippers is that Dallas will be on the second night of a back-to-back, so perhaps Los Angeles can steal a game on the road against a potential Western Conference playoff team. A win is a win is a win. This win wasn’t aesthetically appealing, but they gutted it out. Now, all eyes ahead as the squad rolls into Dallas. Time to get started on another win streak. Good win, guys.

Think of the ugliest thing you've ever seen. Now think of something ten times worse. This game was ten times worse than that.

There's not much to say about this game. It was absolutely ugly, from start to finish. The Clippers completely forgot how to basketball but thankfully Memphis played just as horrifically.

J.J. Redick saved the team's ass down the stretch, hitting a monumental three and getting fouled beyond the arc on the following play in the final minute.

Paul Pierce got way too many minutes. Wes Johnson barely got any. Lance still didn't see the floor in the fourth.

End-of-game free throws were drunk. Marc Gasol was fouled up three, seemingly a smart decision. Instead, he hit the first, missed the second, got his own rebound, and got fouled again with a chance to tie in the final seconds. Instead, he missed the potential tying free throw and let Memphis end their road trip in ignominy.

If you didn't watch this game, don't. You'll be happier for it. Go watch the frolicking Timberwolves instead, and remember a time when life was more innocent.

Both teams are currently in the midst of a two game losing streak. Only one team can end that streak. Will the Clippers break from their mini-rut and quell the Grizzlies? Or will Memphis sink Los Angeles?

Both teams are coming into this game riding concurrent two-game losing streaks. For the Los Angeles Clippers, they’ve lost two games to the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets – the Western Conference finalists from last season. Not to be outdone, the Memphis Grizzlies have lost two in a row themselves. While their competition in those two losses doesn’t rival what the Clippers went up against, they still played on the road against the Portland Trail Blazers and Utah Jazz. There’s nothing easy about either one of those games. As each team rolls into this game, they each are experiencing their own pains.

In both of their losses, the Clippers had a shot to tie or take the lead with under 30 seconds to go. That doesn’t mean they’re terrible in late game situations. It’s just the way the cookie has crumbled for them. In their last game, the team was without All-Star point guard Chris Paul and still gave the Rockets a run for their money despite the lack of coaching acumen from Doc Rivers. If anything can be taken from that game directly, it’s that the team struggled for a large portion of it and still had chances to win or tie.

As it currently stands, the Clippers lead the NBA in both field goal percentage inside 8 feet and field goal percentage from 16-to-24 feet. You can thank superstar Blake Griffin for that. He’s been a livewire of epic proportions. From inside 8 feet, Griffin is now shooting an astounding 74.5 percent on 55 field goal attempts. That alone makes him as dangerous a weapon as there is in the league. Add in his 52.3 percent shooting on 44 attempts from 16-to-24 feet, and you have the ultimate scoring machine from inside the arc. Griffin is the engine driving this team right now.

If Griffin is the engine, then J.J. Redick is the transmission that’s able to shift into the necessary gear at a moment’s notice. So far this season, Redick is enjoying a 50-40-90 start and has affected so many things for the offense. His ability to move off the ball and gravitate defenders towards him opens up heaps of space for everyone involved. Whether some want to admit it or not, Redick might be the team’s most important offensive player just because he allows the other players to roam freer than they would without him there.

With Chris Paul listed as doubtful for this game, it might be up to the Griffin-Redick tandem to deliver more than ever against a Memphis team desperate for a win against anyone. To counteract what the Clippers will do, the Grizzlies will attempt to silence them with their hard-nosed defense that has been everything but that to start this season. It’ll be up to the complimentary players to show up and help the team out as Memphis’ defense chokes down on sets that feature a Griffin or Redick theme. That means Lance Stephenson, DeAndre Jordan, and Austin Rivers must all show up on their best behavior and with their best play.

Opposition's Blog: Grizzly Bear Blues

To say that the Grizzlies have looked like cubs this season would be an understatement. They’ve lost games by 30, 50, 19, and 10 points. They’re struggling, but still capable of putting together a quality 48 minutes against even the toughest of competition. Their leading scorer on a per game basis this season is Mike Conley at just 13.4 points per game. The problem is that he’s shooting under 40 percent from the field. So, too, is Marc Gasol. Of their five leading scorers this season, four are shooting under the 40 percent mark and can’t even space the floor adequately enough to function as a unit.

As solid as their starting lineup has been based on Net Rating (+1.0), they’ve had quite a hard time generating offense and keeping the team afloat before a woeful bench undermines everything they’ve built. Memphis is in shambles right now. Even the once-steady Zach Randolph has turned in some putrid performances. The team has attempted the third most shots from 16-to-24 feet this season, but has converted on just 39.5 percent of them. By comparison, the Clippers have shot 49.2 percent on those shots in one fewer attempt. Memphis, once one of the great teams at finishing inside, is now a staggering 29th in field goal percentage inside 8 feet – just 0.1 percent better than the Indiana Pacers.

As bad as Memphis has been, and as horribly as they have shot threes this season, they still present a unique challenge for Los Angeles. During the past, it didn’t matter how poorly the Grizzlies were playing prior to a game against the Clippers; all that mattered was that Memphis had a style that could suffocate what the Clippers wanted to do. Despite ranking dead last in field goal percentage, second-to-last in three-point percentage, dead last in Effective Field Goal Percentage, dead last in True Shooting Percentage, and playing at a snail’s pace, the Grizzlies will be with the Clippers every step of the way on Monday night. That’s just their way.

At times this season, Memphis has seemed slow, out of shape, and unsure of what they are anymore. The Clippers, to their credit, are the better team despite some of their own issues – i.e. rotational problems, Chris Paul’s injury, and Lance Stephenson not playing critical fourth quarter minutes. Despite all of that, the Clippers are a 4-2 team that is just a couple bounces of the ball away from being 6-0 and the jewel of the league’s eye in the first two weeks of the season. But, you are what your record says you are. Records and competition and numbers say that the Clippers are a really good team. Those same avenues say that the Grizzlies are the opposite of that. We shall see on Monday night.

One of the interesting storylines in this game, outside of the always entertaining Randolph-Griffin matchup, is the return of Matt Barnes to STAPLES Center for the first time since the Clippers traded him to the Charlotte Hornets back in mid-June. During his tenure in Los Angeles, the controversial small forward averaged 10.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.7 assists on 44.9 percent from the field, 35.0 percent from three, and 75.2 percent from the free throw line. He represented Clippers basketball for all three years he donned the jersey. It will be nice to see him again.

Playing without your elite-level point guard is always a tough thing. It’s even tougher when facing a defensive-minded team that can stifle anyone on any night. The pressure will be on Austin Rivers, Pablo Prigioni, and possibly even Lance Stephenson and Jamal Crawford. They’ll need to show up and run the offense when given the reigns to do so. This will be a tough game between two heavyweights. With the bulletin board material thrown their way thanks to the official Clippers twitter account, expect Memphis to come out fired up and disrespected. It’ll take a total team effort to down the Grizzlies, or else the Clippers will be the ones with their foot caught in the bear trap.
